New PEUGEOT 508: A mark of character
- Personal cars
The new PEUGEOT bears the new grille, emblematic of the Brand’s future models, and is fitted with new equipment such as the touch screen, reversing camera and blind spot sensors. It also benefits from economical and efficient Euro 6 power units, such as the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 150 6-speed manual that, with CO2 emissions of just 105g per km, is the best offering in the segment for this level of engine power. Finally, available in three body styles since 2012, the 508 family is growing with the introduction of an exceptional new version, the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 6-speed Automatic (EAT6) RXH, which will be marketed in Europe from November 2014.
Available as a sedan and an SW estate from its launch in early 2011, the PEUGEOT 508 climbed to its position at the head of the mainstream models in the segment.
In 2012, the PEUGEOT 508 RXH HYbrid4 arrived to expand the range with a resolutely innovative offer in the segment for all-road vehicles. What was still just a niche with the RXH body style is today developing rapidly with the arrival of new models. In this top of the range world, the PEUGEOT 508 RXH HYbrid4 still stands out: associated with the Diesel-electric hybrid drive train, its all-road posture, its versatility in use and its environmental performance remain unique in the automobile world.
Bearing an enhancing and differentiating image, the body style offered by the PEUGEOT 508 RXH HYbrid4 is now also available with a conventional internal combustion drive train. Associated with the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 6-speed Automatic (EAT6), the new PEUGEOT 508 RXH BlueHDi will attract a wider potential customer base in this segment.
The youngest range in PEUGEOT’s history
Topping the PEUGEOT’s new ‘8’ range, which now becomes the youngest in its history, the PEUGEOT 508 embodies the Brand’s ambition in moving up-market, its expertise in producing high quality products and the enhancement of its image throughout the world. Built in France and in China, to date more than 370,000 units have been sold since launch. And in China, which since 2013 has become the biggest market for the PEUGEOT 508, represents today more than 36% of sales.
The new PEUGEOT 508 builds on the qualities recognised at the launch of the vehicle: its styling, the range and modernity of its equipment and its dynamic performance.
More assertive exterior styling for more character
The original styling of the PEUGEOT 508, inspired, full of elegance, was already evocative of a robust vehicle with irreproachable build quality. PEUGEOT’s designers built on these qualities to produce a vehicle with even more technology, presence and character.
The new grille is an essential element of the PEUGEOT 508’s styling. More upright and from now on including the PEUGEOT Lion at its centre, it is a clear acknowledgement to its illustrious predecessors in the 5 series. It also allows the new PEUGEOT 508 to introduce a corporate style at the front that is more self-assured and endowing greater status, which will be deployed on the Brand’s future models.
• New proportions to create a new balance
The bonnet has been redesigned to make it more horizontal, firmly placing the three versions in the world of top-of-the-range vehicles and on the sedan improving the balance between front and rear.
Still on the sedan, the rear end is more structured, with a redesigned rear bumper which is distinct from the boot while enhancing its protective function. So the new PEUGEOT 508 sees its length increased by 38mm for the sedan, 16mm of which is in the front overhang (the same for SW) and 22mm for the rear overhang on the sedan.
The integration of the new front end on the PEUGEOT 508 RXH required an increase of 5mm in its front overhang, bringing its length to 4.828m.
These new exterior dimensions accentuate the values of elegance, purity and economy in operation that the PEUGEOT 508 has presented since launch. The spaciousness and boot volume resulting from its generous interior dimensions are unchanged.
• New front and real lamps for a new lighting signature
On the top of the range versions (RXH, GT & Allure), the front of the vehicle is also characterised by the new lighting - headlamps, daytime running lamps, direction indicators, foglamps - all high technology 100% LED.
The headlamps are made up of 3 modules of 4 LEDs each, to which are added 3 additional LEDs outboard of each headlamp for the cornering lighting function. This technology, apart from the factors of safety, speed of operation and economy in use, allows the lighting to be fine-tuned and also accentuates the vehicle’s feline look. The small size and very structured lenses enhance the distinctive and technological aspects.
The visual signature – a curve on the sedan and the SW, claws on the RXH - assured by the daytime running lamps built into the bumper as standard, clearly identifies and is emblematic of the charisma of the new PEUGEOT 508.
With the direction indicators, comprising 4 LEDs following the form of the daytime running lamps, and the front foglamps – standard from trim level 3 – installed in the ends of the front bumper in a chrome insert, in total there are no less than 44 LEDs making up the look of the new PEUGEOT 508.
For other versions, the new PEUGEOT 508 introduces halogen headlamps with excellent photometric performance. The other lamps – daytime running lamps, direction indicators, sidelamps, and front foglamps – are identical to the top-of-the-range versions (RXH, GT & Allure): entirely LED, they provide the same lighting signature.
The rear lamps on the sedan have also been redesigned to make them more horizontal than previously, whether viewed from the side or from directly behind. Each contains 36 LEDs arranged in three claws and their opalescent red handling provides a lighting signature that is strongly identifying and technological.
With their lighting signature, the rear lamps on SW and RXH remain unchanged.
Higher technology content for greater modernity
The interior has changed as well. The dashboard now includes as standard from trim level 2 (Active), a 7 inch touch screen grouping together most of the vehicle’s functions in an intuitive way. Shortcut buttons for the main menus – navigation, air conditioning, radio, connectivity, etc. – are accessible at all times below the touch screen in the dashboard central panel. The integration of the touch screen and its virtual buttons has allowed the central panel to be freed of a few buttons while the centre console includes a new closed storage box.
Positioned in front of the driver, the rich and ultra complete instrument panel makes reference to precision watch making. It is backed up by the Head-Up Display (RXH & GT models) of driving and navigation information in colour, viewed in a retractable smoked screen.
The quality of materials used, whether for finishers or trim cloth, the quality of the equipment and the care taken with finish immediately place the interior of the new PEUGEOT 508 in a top of the range world that is modern and refined, while not ostentatious.
This high value automobile world marries nobility and technology with the presence of numerous systems for comfort and safety. Examples are PEUGEOT Open&Go Keyless Entry and Starting, the automatic electric parking brake, automatic headlamp dipping, the electro-chrome interior mirror, under-inflation detection, front and rear parking sensors, quad-zone automatic air conditioning and JBL badged Hi-Fi. To this comprehensive list of equipment can be added two new systems: Blind Spot Sensors and the reversing camera, providing a colour image in the touch screen.
The new PEUGEOT 508 also benefits from extended connectivity. Based on mobile internet technology, it has available a new generation of connected services: PEUGEOT Connect Apps. Due to the ergonomics of the touch screen, the applications developed are easy to access and their use is intuitive. The driver is provided with practical information in real time, facilitating everyday driving: free parking spaces nearby, fuel prices at filling stations in the vicinity, traffic information, weather, tourist information from the Michelin Guide or TripAdvisor, contacts, as well as the Coyote application (available according to country).
Customers with PEUGEOT Connect Apps have access to an Apps store containing all of the applications available. This optional service is being rolled out and will be offered in 13 countries in Europe by annual subscription. The Plug&Play 3G key that activates PEUGEOT Connect Apps is connected to the USB port located in the glove box on the PEUGEOT 508.
Enhanced driving pleasure for more dynamism and efficiency
As regards suspension, fortunately one finds the components that make the PEUGEOT 508 so agreeable and safe to drive. With double wishbone, decoupled hub front suspension (on the more powerful Diesel versions) or pseudo MacPherson on other versions, and its multi-link rear suspension, the new PEUGEOT 508 continues to offer a remarkable compromise between ride comfort and road holding.
As regards power units, the range offers petrol and Diesel engines of the latest generation.
• A new more efficient and economical Euro 6 petrol engine
For petrol, the new PEUGEOT 508 introduces a new Euro 6 compliant engine : the 1.6-litre THP 165 Stop&Start, available with a six-speed manual gearbox or the new EAT6 six-speed automatic gearbox.
Replacing the Euro 5 1.6-litre THP 156, this new 165hp engine is turbocharged (with a twin scroll turbo), using stochiometric direct injection (200 bar) and has continuously variable inlet valve timing. Delivering 165hp, an increase of 9hp, it allows reduced CO2 emissions from 129g/km (6-speed manual) whereas they were 144g/km at best on the previous generation.
It still has the Stop&Start system by heavy-duty starter motor (STTd), whether with manual or automatic transmission.
For the entry level in the range, the petrol offer is completed by the Euro 5 1.6-litre VTi 120, associated with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
• A wide Diesel range expanded further by BlueHDi technology
For Diesel, to the range of Euro 5 engines offered are added new Euro 6 engines. The following versions are carried over to the new PEUGEOT 508:
- 1.6-litre e-HDi 115, available with a 6-speed manual or electronic automatic gearbox. Very economical, it has official CO2 emissions of 109g /km for its best version.
- 2.0-litre HDi 140, with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
- 2.0-litre HDi 160, available with a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
- 2.2-litre HDi 200, with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. An offer specific to GT versions, this latest generation of the 2.2-litre Diesel engine delivers a high specific output (above 93hp per litre). It has a mono turbo with a turbine made of aluminium titanate, allowing particularly agile pick-up due to its low inertia. Much work carried out on the engine/automatic gearbox adaptation and specific balancer shafts give the new PEUGEOT 508 GT high levels of performance with remarkably low noise levels, while producing CO2 emissions of just 151g /km.
The Euro 6 BlueHDi technology is represented by two efficient versions available from the launch of the new PEUGEOT 508.
- the 2.0-litre BlueHDi 150 6-speed manual, which has CO2 emissions of just 105g/km for both sedan and SW, making it the best offering in the segment for this level of engine power.
- the new 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 Automatic (EAT6) version has been type approved with CO2 emissions of 111g/km for the sedan, constituting one of the best compromises between power and fuel consumption in the segment. The EAT6, the PSA Group’s latest generation of automatic gearboxes, contributes towards the driving enjoyment and exemplary fuel economy of this version.
It is this 180hp version that will be added to the offer on the RXH body style from November 2014. With CO2 emissions of 119g/km and combined fuel consumption at 4.6 l/100km (61.4mpg), the new PEUGEOT 508 RXH 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 Automatic (EAT6) meets the growing demand in the segment for all-road grand tourers.
• The HYbrid4 technology serving the new PEUGEOT 508: the best environmental performance in the segment
A unique proposition in the segment, the HYbrid4 technology is of course carried over to the new PEUGEOT 508 sedan and the RXH version. As a result of its extended availability on the PEUGEOT 3008, 508 and 508 RXH, the Brand can claim 2nd place in the sale of hybrid vehicles in Europe.
The 163 hp 2.0-litre HDi Diesel engine and the 37hp electric motor coupled to the rear wheels operate either alternately or together, in a way that is transparent for the user. The four selectable driving modes (ZEV, 4WD, Sport and Auto) provide the driver with exceptional ease of use and driving experience. And great economy is achieved: type approved with CO2 emissions of 85g/km, and with combined fuel consumption of 3.3 l/100km (85.6mpg), the PEUGEOT 508 HYbrid4 has the best CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures in its segment.
