A century of models

1995 : 406

The 406 was charged with the difficult task of succeeding the 405. It was a great aesthetic success, with a style firmly in line with that of its predecessor. The latter was borne of the collaboration between the Peugeot and Pininfarina styling teams. The coupé, designed with the Turin-based designer's signature flair, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cars of its era. Built on the Xantia's platform, the 406 was first fitted with two 16 valve twin cam transverse petrol engines, in 1.8 and two litre versions (135 hp), and a 1.9 litre diesel engine. The latter was later followed by a 2.1 litre 16 valve 110 hp engine. The 406 was then fitted with a 130 hp diesel HDI, on the new three litre V6, and a new automatic transmission designed in partnership with Renault.
