1989 : 605
The 605 provided a top of the range model for the 05 series, as well as being the last in this line. This executive vehicle, with its noble elegance, was designed to compete with European models, mainly those produced by German manufacturers. It did not, however, have the engine power to achieve this aim. Its four cylinder, two litre engines proved inadequate. The V6 version faced criticism for its poor fuel economy. Diesel engines were not included until 1991, and then only with limited power. The situation was improved with the 145 hp four cylinder petrol turbo and the new V6, which was the successor to the old PRV engine. The 605 did not receive the kind of career it deserved, based on its roadholding and comfort.
