HISTORY
A century of models
1979 : 505

So-called to ensure that, in due course, it would replace the 504, the 505 originally took its place between the 504 and the 604. One of Pininfarina's many successes, the line was extremely refined, as compared to the 504. One shared point ensured there was a link between them: the quad headlights. Technically, the 505 very much remained within the same tradition: rear wheel drive, with a longitudinally mounted engine. Alongside the 2.3 litre diesel engine of the 504 GLD, two petrol engines were originally offered: a two litre engine with an overhead camshaft and a 96 hp carburettor, and the same assembly with the Bosch K-Jetronic injection (110 hp) — also fitted along with a five speed gearbox to the Citroën CX Athena and the Renault R20 TS. The development of engines throughout the eighties was characterised by a very steep increase in power. In terms of diesel engines, the 2.5 litre Turbo reached 110 hp, whereas petrol engines were available from 117 hp on the 2.1 litre to 130 hp on the GTI. There was even a V6 version; the 170 hp 2.8 l with offset crank pins. At its peak, the 2.1 litre Turbo was the most high-performance 505 model — up to 180 hp, reaching 210 km/h in 1985. Restyled in 1986, the 505 stayed in production until 1992.
