Were you inspired by Peugeot models to create Moovie, and if so, which ones?
I didn't use a particular Peugeot model as reference to make Moovie. I wanted to break from what we see in the streets every day so I tried to move away from serial models. I did carefully study Peugeot's concept cars though to understand the brand's style themes. There is also a model I love for its beautiful simplicity: the Coupé 406.
The environment seems at the heart of the Moovie concept. Do you think protecting the environment will be the future of the car industry?
I think ecology must be at the heart of the car industry's preoccupations. It can't afford not to research new energy solutions. Pollution in urban environments is high enough that some cities now prohibit cars from crossing them. That can't leave constructors indifferent.
Are you familiar with this kind of contests or is it your first go?
I entered the first edition in 2000. I then received a newsletter informing me of new editions and I decided to enter this year as I thought I had enough experience to present a good quality project.
How long did the project take you and is it your first car project?
Moovie is not my first project. I've been drawing cars for five years, but it is the first to get such media attention. I thought about Moovie's specs for about a week. It then took me about two weeks to put it on paper. That said, Moovie is only the tip of the iceberg: I worked on another four ideas which I ended up rejecting as too conventional before settling down on Moovie. As with all creative processes, you have to work in iterations to keep coming up with new concepts and explore new avenues.
What are your projects now that you've won La Griffe?
I'm still far from the level I aspire to be at. I still need to study and practice. I'm delighted that Moovie won the contest, it's a great start. But I'm realistic, I need to keep my feet on the ground.
I'll probably try to attend an automobile design school after my degree in Portugal.
